Summary
The Rev. Dr. Alger L. Adams, the first Black graduate of the General Theological Seminary (1937), was a pioneering Episcopal priest and publisher who served the Diocese of New York for nearly 50 years. Alongside his wife, Jessie, he built congregations in Westchester County, edited The Witness, and purchased the Westchester County Press to support the local Black community. For the 2021 Black History Month series at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Harlem, their daughter, Patricia Adams, presented their incredible story and legacy.
