The Right Reverend Paul Moore Jr.

The Right Reverend Paul Moore Jr.  served as the 13th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York from 1972-1989.  His legacy was mixed.

To quote from his New York Times obituary Rev. Paul Moore Jr., Episcopal Bishop With Liberal Voice, Dies at 83, May 1st 2003 by Ari L. Goldman:  “…for more than a decade was the dominant liberal Christian voice in the city, speaking out against corporate greed, racism, military spending and for more assistance to the nation’s poor…”  This explains his inclination in 1974 for the merging of a congregation of African descent with a congregation of European descent.

It did not seem appropriate to reference him on the website without letting readers know of the complexities of his lifestyle exposed after his death.   In his eldest child, Honor Moore’s The Bishop’s Daughter A Memoir,  published in 2008  his bisexual and extramarital relationships are revealed.
