In 1883, John Peterson—a teacher and deacon at St. Philip’s Church in Harlem—alongside the Reverend Alexander Crummell, called Black clergy and laity together for a conference at the Church of the Holy Communion in New York City. This gathering is recognized as the inaugural meeting of the Conference of Church Workers Among Colored People (CCWACP).

While an individual photograph of Deacon Peterson is unavailable, the accompanying image is sourced from the electronic edition of George F. Bragg’s History of the Afro-American Group of the Episcopal Church. The photograph captures the 1887 Conference held at St. Mary’s in Baltimore. Because Deacon Peterson passed away the following year, in 1888, there remains a possibility that he is pictured among the attendees.
