The Church of the Messiah was an early African American Episcopal congregation in lower Manhattan. The congregation developed out of a mission established in 1836 by the Reverend Niles of St. Ann’s Church, Brooklyn. Serving a community predominantly of African descent, the church was led for a time by the prominent nineteenth-century intellectual, abolitionist, and divine, Reverend Alexander Crummell, who assumed leadership around 1845. Historical records, including diocesan journals and Crummell’s own “Jubilate” sermon, indicate that the mission relied significantly on external financial support received from England, a funding stream that sustained the congregation until it ceased in 1858.
